Our destination was a rock formation known as the Bears Ears, on Bears Ears Mountain (11,759'; 3,584 m), left of center, and Bears Ears Lake on the other side of the mountain. As the crow flies, the distance to the top of the mountain from this point is only about 4 miles (6.4 km), but because of the many switchbacks going up the mountain, the distance on horseback is more like 10 miles (16 km).
